THE FAMILY OF 14-YEAR-OLD ADRIAN MITCHELL JOHNSTON SPEAKS OUT FOR THE FIRST TIME ABOUT HIS SHOCKING SENSELESS MURDER AND ALLEGATIONS OF GANG TIES.
The family of Adrian Mitchell Johnston are speaking out about his shocking murder and the news of his association with a Toronto gang known as the Gatorz. The 14-year-old was shot and killed in a field near Scarlett Road and St.Clair Avenue shortly after 5pm on Monday May 11th 2009. Neighbours said they heard three shots and told police they saw a man in dark clothing and a green baseball cap running away. Adrian was Toronto's 18th homicide of 2009.
Family members issued this statement today to the media.
"Adrian will always be our beloved son, nephew and brother senselessly taken away from us by someone he was last seen talking to in a hydro field. We do not know who this person was and have been told by the Toronto police service that there was no indication that Adrian was linked to a gang. The police has always maintained that fact in the media during their ongoing investigation.
Adrian did not deal drugs,was a good boy who went to school and the library daily. Our Adrian was not in any gang or have any gang affiliation contrary to the Globe and Mail's sources in the Saturday July 18th 2009 paper. We are very hurt and devastated and while at this difficult time, we keep looking for answers and are urging the Toronto police investigators to continue helping us to solve this case.
Though Adrian was the only child of his mother, he had 7 siblings he shared on his father's side and was very close to them. All the children miss him and grieve daily. We need closure not allegations that tarnishes Adrian's memory. None of our teenagers are saints but we should be cautious on how we label a good kid who met with an unknown person an "associate" of a gang. At this time, our family is appealing to the public to help us by using Crime Stoppers if they have any information on who killed Adrian.We are also using Facebook and Twitter to initiate dialogue in the teenage and school community.
On what would have been Adrian's 15th birthday, August 14th 2009, we plan on holding a public rally and family news conference at the site of his murder in efforts to finding his killer.
